Brenton Park was borne through my love of horses and the never ending desire to produce or find the ideal “elegant english thoroughbred type” whether it be a pony, galloway or hack.
My soft spot is for thoroughbreds and the reason for that can be traced back to my uncle who resided in Sydney. I used to travel there for the Easter holidays where I would assist him and be taught in all area's in-relation to his race horses.
During my youth, I met Cliff and Joan Wilson of Naryl Stud. Joan took it upon herself to instruct me and we eventually developed a great friendship. This experience was enhanced by watching Cliff handle his three stallions .
Cliff and Joan need no introduction to the show world as they had always bred and shown “Royal Quality” ponies and horses. They would often have two or three of their own stock in the lineup contending for a championship award at Agricultural or Royal Shows.
They, in turn, introduced me to Roger and Gail Searle. With the assistance of Cliff and Joan, Roger and Gail commenced their own stud called “Newington Stud”. Their stud is situated on the Bellarine Peninsula where they still remain breeding outstanding “Royal” winning ponies and galloways.
My love affair with horses continued when at one Melbourne Royal, Joan introduced me to Dianne Jose, a lovely lady of “Salisbury Stud”. I had always liked Di’s horses and discovered that we shared a similar vision and admired the same lines. Ever since, we have remained good friends and have been experimenting with breeding, swapping “pros and cons” and our various experiences.
During one of my many ‘Riding Pony Stud’ tours, I met Mr. Merv Symes of "Myscal Stud". Over the years we have remained very good friends whom I consider more like family. Along with Marj, (Merv's wife), Michelle Feldtmann (his partner in showing) and the stud, we have enjoyed a lot of fun times. Through these associations, I have gained so much knowledge that comes with good friendships.
On one of my many visits to Benalla, Merv, (as usual), was showing me the myriad of lovely mares and foals. I spied a handsome colt standing up behind his mother under one of the many redgums. I asked Merv who he was, and he replied, "Just a roughy Jonesy". I showed great interest in him and later was fortunate enough to acquire him.
I have shown all types of ponies and horses from the local Gymkhana's through to Royal Shows. I have trained, instructed, judged and bred one or two of my own. Now I have the chance to expanded on the knowledge I have acquired and continue my passion of breeding.
We look forward, with great excitement to see our progeny which will be due early next season 2008.
A special acknowledgment to Ken and Elaine Daniels for allowing the use of their property as an ongoing concern to enable our stud to grow.
